Making an Easy Bushel Basket Planter is a perfect way to DIY your outdoor space this summer. A bag of soil, flowers, a trash bag, and a bushel basket are all you need for this super cute planter.
If you watched my Insta stories a couple of weeks ago you saw me making these easy bushel basket planter for our front porch. I have been wanting to decorate our front porch for the longest time and this summer was the summer to finally do it!
Tall planters can be on the pricey end and the ones I found were a little more than I was wanting to spend. So with a little creativity and a call to my mom for execution, these bushel basket panters were born!
All You Need to Make a Bushel Basket Planter Is
- Bushel Basket
- Spray Paint or Acrylic Paint with a paintbrush (in your chosen color)
- Round 14 Inch Plastic Planter Liner
- A Large Trash Bag
- Large Bag of Potting Soil
- Flowers of Choice
How to Make
Paint your bushel basket in your desired color. I choose black since that matched our front porch. I used a can of black spray paint for this and did 2 coats. Bushel baskets are pretty porous and rough so they can soak up a lot of paint. I did not paint the inside since that will be unseen.
You can also use acrylic paint and a paint on with a paint brush as well.
Let dry fully.
Place a 14-inch plastic planter saucer at the bottom of the bushel basket. (*affiliate link)
Take a large trash bag (kitchen size or larger) and cut a couple of slits in the bottom of the bag.
Fill the trash bag up with soil halfway, then place in the bushel basket on top of the plastic saucer. Continue to fill most of the way full.
Place in desired flowers. This will work for full sun or shade flowers just depending on where your basket will be. Ours is under our front porch with mostly shade. I didn't Begonias.
Add more soil around the edges to cover up any trash bag edges.
Place in desired location and water as needed.
This will also be perfect for ferns or in the fall with mums. For a plant that is large and comes in its own plastic container, just keep the plastic saucer in the bottom and place the fern or mum right inside.
Using the trash bag will be easy to clean up as well to just lift out after the season is over and replace it with some mums. Or leave in and replace the flowers depending on the season.
