Description

Dive into a heartwarming dish that blends the savory goodness of ground beef with the comforting taste of potatoes: Oven Baked Cheesy Potato and Hamburger Casserole. This easy-to-follow recipe, with step-by-step pictures, offers layers of diced potatoes smothered in a rich meat sauce, all topped with a generous sprinkle of melted cheddar and baked until hot and bubbly. Perfect for both weeknight dinners and special occasions!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Pound Ground Beef
  • 1/2 Onion - diced
  • 2 Cloves Garlic - minced
  • 1 Tablespoon Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • 1 Cup Beef Broth
  • 3/4 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Parsley
  • 1/2 Teaspoo Thyme
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/4 Teaspoon White Pepper
  • 2 Pounds Russet Potatoes - peeled and small diced
  • 8 Ounces Cheddar Cheese - shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a large pot, add ground beef over medium heat. Cook for 5-7 minutes breaking up into small pieces and stirring while cooking.
  3. Add in onion and garlic and cook for another 5-10 minutes, or until the ground beef is cooked all the way through and no longer pink.
  4. While the meat is cooking, peel and dice potatoes into small cubes. Place them in a large bowl or sink of ice-cold water to prevent them from browning as you dice and work.
  5. Once the beef is cooked, drain off as much of the liquid fat as you can. Add in the flour and butter. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Turn the heat to medium-low. Slowly whisk in the milk. Stir until starting to thicken. Add in broth and whisk together.
  7. Add in spices and let simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Drain the curve potatoes and pat dry. Spread evenly across the bottom of the greased baking dish.
  9. Pour the meat mixture on top.
  10. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the top. Cover with foil.
  11. Bake for 50 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes.
  12. Remove and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • To store leftovers: place in an airtight container or tightly wrap the baking dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
