Platter of Little Smokies Pigs in a Blanket.

As a Southern cook, whenever I am planning a dinner party or get-together of any kind, I always always have an appetizer out and waiting ... and I have tons of Southern appetizer recipes here at FSS! Small bite-size things like Southern-style pimento cheese dip with mayo and Southern devilled eggs without mayo are some fan favorites. They are all must-haves always - and this recipe is no different!

This beloved childhood favorite is so easy to make, and there is a good reason it is loved by small and big kids alike. We are elevating this classic mini pigs in a blanket recipe just a little by using puff pastry instead of crescent dough and topping it with everything bagel seasoning for a little something something extra. You won't be disappointed - I promise!

100% snackable, 100% dippable, and 100% delicious! Let's get to baking!

A couple of tips before we begin

After making this recipe several times in my own home kitchen to make sure it was jjuuussttt right, there where a couple of things I learned that were helpful.

  1. Puff Pastry - sometimes this is hard to find, but it can typically be found in the frozen dessert section of the grocery store. I used the Pepperridge Farm brand, and it came with 2 sheets inside (so this recipe is easy to double if desired). But key tip....REMEMBER - this is frozen! So you will need to place this in the fridge for 24 hours before you want to make this recipe to thaw. I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten to do this, and it is so frustrating! And just me, I have tried to thaw this quickly, and it has always resulted in a disaster. So write a note or set an alarm on your phone - whatever helps you remember to thaw this ahead of time!
  2. Lit'l Smokies - These come in a sausage and beef option - either works, but I usually go for the sausage. You can use 2 of the smaller packages or 1 of the larger ones if doubling this recipe. Make sure to pat dry with a paper towel before assembling.

Sprinkle some flour on a countertop and gently roll out the thawed puff pastry with a rolling pin to roughly a 10x14" rectangle. Using a knife, cut long strips about 1" in width.
Rolling 2 little smokies in small puff pastry strips.
Then cut about 3" up and roll each little smoke inside, wrapping the pastry around completely.

⭐️ I like to use this pastry double cutter wheel when cutting out the puff pastry - it just makes it super fast and easy! (affiliate link)

Brush with an egg wash and sprinkle everything bagel seasoning on top. Place in a preheated 400-degree oven and bake for 20-25 minutes - or until slightly golden brown on top.

Once finished, remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes. Place Lil smokies pigs in the blanket on a platter and serve immediately while warm with some homemade 4-ingredient honey mustard sauce or Kentucky bourbon BBQ sauce for dipping! These little bite-sized beauties will fly off the platter - guaranteed!

Description

A beloved easy southern appetizer staple, pigs in a blanket made with little smokies and puff pastry is always a hit! Made with just 4 ingredients, these are the perfect bite-size appetizer to serve at any party!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Sheet Puff Pastry - thawed
  • 1 - 14 Ounce Package Little Smokies
  • 1 Egg + 1 Teaspoon Water
  • Everything Bagel Seasoning
  • Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

Instructions

*Before starting the recipe - place puff pastry in the fridge 24 hours before baking to thaw!*

  1. Preheat oven. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Prep dough. Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry and roll it out to a larger rectangle about 10 x 14" in size (does not have to be exact). Cut into smaller rectangles about 1 x 3" in size - again a rough estimate. You can take a Little Smokie and measure the width of the dough (about 1") and then enough length to wrap it completely around (about 3"), slice and cut from there. These are just guideline measurements to help you. Wrap each smaller rectangle around each Little Smokie, gently pressing the dough on the underside to seal. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and repeat with the rest of the Smokies.
  3. Egg wash. Whisk together the egg and water in a bowl. Gently brush the tops of each smokie with the egg wash and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning.
  4. Bake. Place in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top and bottom.
  5. Serve. Remove from the oven and place on a platter. Serve with honey mustard , BBQ sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!
