These Southern-style sausage balls are utterly irresistible! With only 5 ingredients—ground pork sausage, grated cheddar cheese, milk, Italian seasoning and Bisquick baking mix—they're a breeze to make. Formed into bite-sized balls and oven-baked, they're juicy, flavorful, and SO delicious whether served warm, at room temperature, or even cold! Recipe yields 50 balls.

😋 This is a Southern staple that I have no self-control with!

As a Southern cook and here in the South, there is absolutely no bridal or baby shower that is without sausage balls! This recipe is a MUST for all showers, holiday parties, and anywhere an appetizer is needed.

If you come to a wedding or baby shower in my home or my mom's one if not all of the following will be present along with Bisquick sausage balls - Canned Biscuits Ham & Swiss Cheese Sandwiches, classic Southern deviled eggs, 2-minute cream cheese and pepper jelly dip and crunchy baked rice krispie cheese coins. I could name 100 more but that is literally why I have this blog lol.

It would be a crime if I didn't share our family's version of these that have made hundreds of times in my life. You only need 5 ingredients and 1 bowl. Plus these can be served warm, room temp, or even cold. And they are so great to prep ahead. Making hosting that party even easier! Let me show you some of my tips for making these the best bite-size appetizers of all time.

box of bisquick, 1 pound of country sausage, bowl of milk, shredded cheddar cheese, and a bottle of italian seasining

💡 Some ingredient callouts. We have always used the brand name Bisquick mix. I am sure you can use others but this is how I was taught and I have not strayed.

shredding a clock of cheese with a box cheese grater.
I recommend buying a block of cheddar cheese and shredding it yourself. Do not use a bag of pre-shredded cheese - it may be easier, but taking the extra 5 minutes makes the taste and quality of these SO MUCH BETTER! You won't be sorry!

    How to Make

ingredients for sausage balls in a bowl together
STEP 1: Place all the ingredients in one large bowl.
mixing sauste ball dough together with a gloved hand.
STEP 2: use your hands to mix everything together evenly. I like wearing kitchen gloves to make this a little less messy.

STEP 3: use a cookie scoop to scoop out the balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

STEP 4: Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 until golden brown on top.

STEP 5: Remove and let cool for 10 minutes

Using a cookie scoop* helps ensure the same uniform size with each ball. This helps them bake evenly at the same time too. I like to scoop them all out onto the baking sheet and then roll them in my hands to make sure they are packing well and in an even ball shape. (*affiliate link)

    Prep Ahead Tips

Yes, you can make sausage balls ahead of time! In fact, they are an excellent make-ahead recipe!

    1. Make fully according to directions and let cool completely. These can be made up to 3 days in advance and kept sealed in the fridge until needed.
    2. To Freeze: make fully according to directions and let cool completely. Place in a freezer-safe zip-top bag and freeze for up to 6 months. Place in the fridge 24 hours prior to needed to thaw completely. Place on a platter and bring to room temperature on the counter 1 hour before serving.

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 3 Cups Bisquick Baking Mix
    • 1 Pound Pork Sausage
    • 4 Cups Cheddar Cheese - grated
    • ½ Cup Milk
    • 1 Teaspoon Italian Seasoning

    Instructions

    1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Stir all ingredients together in a large bowl. Using your hands is best to fully mix everything since it is a heavy and thick dough. You can also place it in a stand mixer and mix it that way.
    3. Using a cookie scoop, scoop out into 1 inch balls. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top. Remove and enjoy.

    Notes

    • Sausage balls can be enjoyed warm, room temperature, or even cold. Making for a great and easy appetizer!
    • You can use gluten-free Bisquick to make gluten-free. Use the exact same measurements for everything.
